Salem's Saturday Review

Aberystwyth Mon Amour

Malcolm Pryce

Schoolboys are disappearing all over Aberystwyth and nobody knows why. Louie Knight, the town's private investigator, soon realises that it is going to take more than a double ripple from Sospan, the philosopher cum ice-cream seller, to help find out what is happening to these boys and whether or not Lovespoon, the Welsh teacher, Grand Wizard of the Druids and controller of the town, is more than just a sinister bully. And just who was Gwenno Guevara?

Salem here. I'm back meow! And with a cracker of a book. My mistress picked this up in a charity shop for 75p. What a rare and lucky fine because this book was wonderful. A witty mystery that kept me guessing what was going to happen next with a surprise ending that I never saw coming. Its satirical detective noir at its best, with the characters like Louie Knight - an old fashioned man who can't say no to a lady, the singing siren Myfanwy Montez and the Druids turned gangsters. Only point of contention ~licks his paw and rubs his face~ is a lack of cats. There is one but he does not represent the species well. Would be worth the full book jacket price. Meow.
