Dusty Pages Review: Fat Vampire
Doug Lee is undead quite by accident attacked by a desperate vampire, he finds himself cursed with being fat and fifteen forever. When he has no luck finding some goth chick with a vampire fetish, he resorts to sucking the blood of cows under cover of the night. But it s just not the same.
Then he meets the new Indian exchange student and falls for her hard. Yeah, he wants to bite her, but he also wants to prove himself to her. But like the laws of life, love, and high school, the laws of vampire existence are complicated it s not as easy as studying Dracula. Especially when the star of Vampire Hunters is hot on your trail in an attempt to boost ratings. . . .
I picked this book up in 2011 when visiting a friend in Vancouver ( I think. I bought a lot of books, its a bit of a blur) and finally decided it was time to read it. The story started out really funny. Doug is the ultimate nerd vampire, risking sun exposure for comiccon and falling in love with the new foreign exchange student who doesn't know why he's called meatball. However as the book progressed I became confused whether the book was about Sajel (his crush) or about Doug. I also honestly thought they would end up together.
The second half of the book takes a darker turn and ends on a sad note. Though at first glance I thought the ending was whatever you wanted it to be from a list of options. Its a very poignant story, it tackles teen issues of identity, public image and even takes a small stab at homophobia. It left me with a lot of questions and standing on an emotional knife edge.
I give it
